SEO (search engine optimization) is all about helping your web site show up higher in the rankings for targeted keyphrases (for example, we've helped clients target keyphrases such as "maple burl" and "comfrey gel"). Choosing the right set of keyphrases to target is the first step (and sometimes the most obvious keyphrases for your site are so over-competitive that it's best to choose a less competitive keyphrase and fight for that instead and sometimes a keyphrase isn't searched on often enough to even bother with) and then it's just a matter of tweaking your web site (typically one page is chosen to be tweaked for each targeted keyphrase) so it's more search-engine-friendly. Keep in mind that search engines can't see text embedded in a graphic (.gif or .jpg) We call what we do "organic SEO" which means we use techniques that harmonize with the search engine algorithms (i.e., we make a set of changes to your web pages that allow them to show up higher in the rankings over time). Many of our clients also run pay-per-click campaigns at places like Google and Overture and our research helps them choose phrases to target. SEO can be challenging because the search engine landscape is ever-changing and techniques that worked well last year may not have any affect this year. We encourage clients to re-visit their search engine status annually (if not more often).

We just launched a new site that is currently showing up #1 at MSN for a search on the primary keyphrase.
The other day one of our clients decided they wanted to show up in the rankings for searches on "maple burl". We helped them create a new web page on their site optimized for "maple burl" and since its debut this page has consistently been in the top 10 at Google.
